Washington Co, MD – Fire & EMS Crews from Washington, Franklin, Frederick, and Adams counties arrived at 14510 Barkdoll Rd. at around 2;20 AM, after a 911 call for reports of a house fire.
According to Deputy Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire, 7 occupants lived in the home and 6 were able to make it out without any injuries.They were checked out by EMS and were said to be in good condition and no transports were made for any of those residents.
Officials reported the death of an adult male. No details about his age or name were released. The chief medical examiner will confirm the cause of death and the identity of the man.
Fire investigators determined that when they were exiting the home the victim told the other residents that he was returning to the basement in hopes of locating and saving the family pet. After that he was never observed again. Firefighters located his body on the front porch. Fire investigators believed that he had attempted to self extricate through the basement door where he collapsed.
State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci said “The tragic incident is a heartbreaking but real example of why going back inside does not guarantee that you and your family will make it out alive. Get out, stay out,”
Deputy Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire said that a minimum of 6 cats that lived in the house. All are presumed to have died in the fire.
Six out of the 7 residents were related, including the victim. The 7th resident was the victim’s boyfriend.
According to a press release from the State Fire Marshal, “Deputy State Fire Marshals determined that the fire originated on the exterior front porch.”
Smoke alarms are said to have been present and were active during the fire.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated and it is not believed to be the result of a crime.
The house fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and nearly 50 firefighters responded to the very early morning house fire.
